How to Get Rid of Eyeliner Stains on Various Surfaces

Eyeliner can beautifully accentuate your eyes, but if it lands on your clothing, carpet, or upholstery, it can leave a tough stain. Learn these effective tips to remove eyeliner stains from different surfaces.

Removing Eyeliner from Clothing

Important: These steps are not recommended for delicate fabrics like silk or wool.

1. Apply a stain remover to the affected area.

2. Let it sit for at least one minute to penetrate the stain.

3. Gently blot (do not rub) the stain using a small amount of liquid laundry detergent and a clean cloth.

4. Machine wash as usual, then air-dry. Check that the stain is completely gone before using a dryer, as heat can set any remaining residue.

5. If the stain persists, prepare a solution by mixing 1 tablespoon of ammonia with ½ cup of warm water. Dip a white cleaning cloth into the solution.

6. Blot the eyeliner stain until the area is thoroughly soaked.

7. Continue rinsing and blotting with the cloth until the stain disappears.

8. Machine wash again, ensuring the stain is removed before drying.

How to Remove Eyeliner Stains from Upholstery

Removing eyeliner from upholstery can be effectively managed with a couple of different methods. However, always start by checking the care label on your furniture to ensure safe cleaning practices.

Method 1: Dish Soap Solution (Molly Maid’s Method)

Molly Maid recommends the following steps to tackle eyeliner stains:

1. Prepare a cleaning solution by mixing 2 cups of water with 1 tablespoon of dishwashing soap.

2. Using a clean, white cloth, gently sponge the stained area with the soapy solution.

3. Blot the area with a dry cloth to absorb excess moisture.

4. Repeat these steps until the stain is completely removed.

5. To rinse, sponge the area with plain water, blotting with a clean towel each time to remove any detergent residue.

6. Finish by blotting the area dry.

Method 2: Eraser and Solvent Technique (Rainbow International)

1. Gently use a pencil eraser to try and lift the eyeliner stain. Avoid excessive pressure to protect the fabric.

2. If the stain persists, apply a small amount of dry cleaning solvent onto a white cotton towel and blot the area.

3. To remove any solvent residue, lightly dab the spot with a dampened white cloth, then blot with a clean towel until dry.

How to Remove Eyeliner from Carpet

To effectively remove eyeliner stains from carpet, follow one of these two methods.

Method 1: Ammonia Solution

1. Prepare a cleaning solution by mixing 1 tablespoon of ammonia with ½ cup of warm water.

2. Use a white cleaning towel to avoid any color transfer onto the carpet. Dip the towel into the mixture.

3. Blot the eyeliner stain with the towel, being careful not to rub, as this could spread the stain.

4. Continue to rinse the towel and blot the area repeatedly until the stain fades.

Tip: If ammonia is unavailable, you can substitute it with warm water and a drop of dish soap.

Method 2: Shaving Cream

1. Apply a small amount of shaving cream to a clean, white towel.

2. Blot the shaving cream onto the eyeliner stain, again avoiding any rubbing motion.

3. Rinse the towel with warm water and continue blotting the stained area.

4. Repeat as needed until the stain is gone.
